MBA journey: worth it or not?

In the summer of 2015, I got this idea that I should go back to school and earn my MBA. This is something I had considered off and on over the years; my undergraduate degree is in life sciences and I had no formal business education. My employer reimburses πŸ’― % for As and for that, the employee commits to 2 years from the time the course ends. The classes are fast-tracked; at the end of September 2015 I completed my first course (with an A  πŸ€“)  and am wrapping up course #6 this week. My next class is slated for mid-August 2017.

I find myself at a bit of a crossroads. I’m halfway done and have a 4.0 GPA. I’ve nearly earned back all of my commitment for the first course. Managing my coursework along with my full time job, the kids’ homework, and everything else is tough. But that’s not what’s bugging me. I wonder – is the investment of my time worth it? To be honest, I have no idea what I want to be when I grow up (and I’m no spring πŸ₯)! I want to retire early, not climb the ladder!!! On the flip side, maybe earning the degree will help me achieve something else great down the road. If I get laid off I won’t owe anything; if I get terminated for cause or leave on my own, I pay the company back.

So is it worth it, at my age and for the goals I want to achieve? I don’t think it earns me more happiness, but I cannot be sure it won’t in the future. What do you think? Is an MBA over 40 worth it, in light of the above considerations?
